When a tooth is experiencing decay, infection or trauma that is past the point of repair, it may become necessary for a dentist to perform an extraction. In some cases, tooth extraction may also be recommended if crowding of the teeth is occurring. When the tooth is above the gum line, a simple extraction is performed using local anesthesia, forceps and a lifter. This method is minimally invasive with a short recovery period. Patients undergoing this procedure can expect slight bleeding and clotting at the site of the extraction. Mild symptoms that occur will generally subside within 24 hours. Gauze is provided for the patient with postoperative instructions. In the event that a tooth is not visible, broken beneath the gum line or a wisdom tooth becomes impacted, a surgical extraction will be performed. This type of extraction is more complicated and requires invasive removal of the tooth by making an incision on the gum. A dental surgeon will administer local anesthesia often accompanied by a topical anesthesia at the injection site. While uncommon, more difficult extractions may be treated with general anesthesia. The soft tissue is then cut down to the bone, which allows for the tooth to be sectioned and divided. After the tooth is elevated and removed, the socket will be free of tooth and bone fragment and extensively irrigated with saline solution. The patient will require stitches following a surgical extraction, and some bleeding will occur. A gauze pack is placed in the socket to stop the bleeding in order for a clot to be formed. It is recommended that a patient rest the day of undergoing a tooth extraction. Postoperative instructions and information are provided to ensure a successful recovery.
When the Dentist talks about using a tooth sealant, many people do not know what the dentist means. This article will explain what a sealant is and why it is important for teeth health in people of all ages.
Adults or kids can use sealants. The sealant is a liquid, plastic substance that hardens into a resin with the use of a blue light. The sealant will mold to any crevices or grooves in the freshly cleaned tooth and will help prevent tooth decay by blocking harmful food from entering these depressions. The Dentist can apply sealant after a routine cleaning in a matter of minutes.
This plastic sealant fills the grooves, ridges and depressions of the teeth. Once the enamel of the teeth is gone, there is nothing the dentist can do to recreate the enamel. This thin sealant protects each tooth and shields the teeth from damage. This protective sealant seals out damage from plaque and food particles.
The best candidates for tooth sealants are children and teenagers. These youngsters need to receive this sealant on their teeth as soon as their molars and premolars come in. Adults also benefit from this sealant process if their teeth are in good health. Kids are prone towards decay of the teeth from five years to almost 14-years of age.

Considering rhinoplasty in Seattle Washington? Talk to Dr William Portuese.
What is rhinoplasty or nose reshaping?
Rhino means nose and plasty means to shape, mold, or form. Rhinoplasty was the fifth most common procedure one by plastic surgeons in 2012, according to the latest statistics released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Many plastic surgeons feel rhinoplasty is the most artistic and difficult cosmetic surgical procedure. I agree, because the surgeon makes three-dimensional changes which instantly alter other areas of the nose.
How important is the preoperative analysis in rhinoplasty?
Accurate preoperative analysis is 50 percent of the outcome. I encourage my patients to bring in photographs of how they envision the results. Only a limited number of experts specialize in rhinoplasty, so do your homework.
"The most important first step in a successful Nose Job Surgery outcome is listening to the patient and really understanding what their hopes and desires are.. then delivering on that expectation." The goal in primary rhinoplasty surgery is to create a nose that enhances the attractiveness of the entire face while preserving or improving nasal function (breathing). Each nose is unique, therefore, for each case, an individualized nose job surgery operative plan is developed that takes into account the patient's anatomy and cosmetic goals.
